Canvas

    Canvas
Beginning his youth as a mountain man, trapping and fishing with his grandfather in Maine and Canada, Jim Roiax has amassed a wealth of experiences that translate into impressive stone carvings, paintings, pottery and culinary treats.

Around the historic home he shares with wife Karen Coody Cooper, his artwork is displayed among other masters’ work and their own museum-quality collectibles. Jeptha Crew, the first drugstore owner in Tahlequah, built the home using parts from the Sears and Roebuck architectural catalog.

The couple has called Tahlequah home for four years, after living in Maryland for 14 years, and Lawton before that. Cooper worked at the Smithsonian Museum, and now she is on staff at the Cherokee Heritage Center. Roaix has been a physical plant engineer at a couple of universities and retired from Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum on Chesapeake Bay.

“I missed Oklahoma while I was away,” Roaix said.

Now retired, he works every day on art of one form or another, but always dedicates several hours to stone carving, mostly using soapstone and alabaster and creating birds. His grandfather said he carved a standing skunk out of pine when he was 5 and sold it for $5 to a man on a fishing trip.

That was 60 years ago. Roaix has always done painting and sketching, but never stick figures or coloring books.

He’s the featured artist opening this week at the Muskogee Art Guild gallery. The guild recently turned its studio into a gallery and held a drawing to see which artists would show and who would be the featured artist. Roaix was selected first, but the show will change every three months.

Lou Russano was Roiax’s mentor. He was an art restorer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art who moved to Connecticut, and Roaix met him through his son, who was his assistant coach for little league.

“He painted in the old masters’ style and often painted copies of originals for people who didn’t want to display their originals and expose them to sunlight,” Roaix said. “He sold a copy of Vermeer’s, ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring,’ for $40,000.”

He also got Roiax into pastels, which has become an addiction.

For 5-1/2 years, Roiax worked with Russano.

“Lou took a liking to me. He never touched my art, but showed me what to do and taught me a lot about color,” Roiax said. “Guys don’t do that – read instructions – but he forced me to go through all the basic steps, like a circle for a face and color wheel.”

Roaix mostly paints people with a lot of character in their faces.

“I don’t do beautiful; I do people who spent too much time in the sun, who look like their faces caught fire and daddy beat it out with a rake,” he said.

So many people think they can’t paint, but Roaix believes if you can tie your shoes without looking, you can paint.

“It’s like playing the piano or typing on a computer; it’s all muscle memory,” he said.

Everybody needs exposure to all the arts, Roaix said.

“Kids are fortunate enough to have a teacher who saw not a stick figure, but something good, and praised you, when you were inspired,” he said. “Unfortunately, many people don’t give a damn about art.Regrettably, often it’s the civic fathers or the school boards. The first cut always seems to be the arts.”

He does art projects and other interesting experiments with his grandkids when they visit.

“Ever put Ivory soap in the microwave or Mentos in Diet Pepsi to watch it make a fountain? I’ve gotten 25 feet, but Mythbusters set the record at 34 feet,” he said.

Roiax’s interest in stone carving was awakened when he found a piece of partially sanded and polished black soapstone in 1979 at a flea market for $4.

“I went home a carved a whale and thought, ‘Boy, this is fun,’” he said.

A current project is an orca. He has about eight hours in the work so far, and expects it to sell for $240.

Roiax puts 30 minutes to 90 hours into a piece. He’s started an eagle that began as 171 pounds and will finish about 120 or 130 pounds, and will be holding an image of the earth split open, he said. It’s called “Earth Mother.”

He’d been using stones from British Columbia from a quarry with nine different colors, and other local quarries, so he was pleased when the Internet came about and he discovered other quarries at more affordable prices in 1989. One of his most amazing opportunities came from an aboriginal quarry in Connecticut to which he had access when his wife worked at the American Indian Archaeological Institute. At that time, he was publishing an American Indian newspaper, The Eagle, with a 5,000 circulation in all 50 states and 27 countries. He published that for 9-1/2 years, as well as a book in the late ‘80s called, “Rooted Like the Ash Tree: New England Indians and their Relationships to the Land.”

“You can’t argue with the stone. I may start out making a very good frog and wind up with a very good turtle,” Roaix said. “You can’t get out what’s not in there. The stone will argue back or break.”

Teaching others is a joy for Roaix. He teaches at the Muskogee Art Guild, where led at a summer camp for kids. He also demonstrates fiber arts at the Cherokee Heritage Center the first Saturday of most months, and for more than a decade has taught at a summer camp, the Mid-Atlantic Primitive Skills, in May.

A workshop will be held at the Muskogee Art Guild Aug. 8-12, costly $80 for the week or $60 for three days, with all the proceeds going to the guild.

“We had an art show in April at Arrowhead Mall, and one of my students took second place, while I only got honorable mention,” he said. “I think that’s cool. I was prouder of that!”

He’s at a time in his life when he wants to share his talents and skills with others.

“I’m supposed to mentor now; that’s part of being Native American, to pass down your skills and your knowledge,” said Roiax.

Roiax is a Mohawk, and he believe art is an expression of his culture and that of others. “It makes for a well-rounded person, if you appreciate music and art,” he said. “People who create music and art use more of their brain and are better students.”

Camino

The Camino Project has released a first beta for version 2.1 of its open source web browser for Mac OS X. According to Camino Team Coordinator Samuel Sidler, this second preview release of Camino 2.1 introduces several notable improvements and enhances support for web standards.
Camino 2.1, like Firefox 3.6, is based on version 1.9.2 of Mozilla's Gecko web rendering platform. Aimed at testers and early adopters, the first beta offers improved control over plug-ins and a new history backend; autocomplete in the location bar has also been completely "overhauled" and the ability to hide the status bar has been added. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and reportany bugs that they find.
Further information about this first beta, including a full list of changes, can be found in the official release announcementand in the release notes. Camino 2.1 Beta 1 is available to download for Mac OS X 10.4 and later. Users already running the Camino nightly builds should be notified of the preview release via the built-in software update mechanism.
The Camino Project is almost as old as Firefox; the main difference is that the user interface is based on Cocoa instead of XUL to better tailor Camino to the Mac operating system. Camino source code is released under theMPL/LGPL/GPL tri-license. The latest stable release is Camino 2.0.7, a maintenance and security update from March.

The New Yorker

Maybe success on the iPad doesn’t rely on stylish, interactive features – Condé Nast has revealed their highest-selling iPad app is The New Yorker, which focuses on presenting its articles in a clean and readable format. Many are surprised that The New Yorker has had more success than Condé Nast’s more technologically stimulating apps, directed to a younger demographic, like Wired.  The magazine has slowly begun shifting resources to web, by hiring their first web news editor only nine months ago and implementing an online paywall, in an effort to shift to a business model which relies on revenue from consumers.
The magazine’s deputy editor Pamela Maffei McCarthy told The New York Timesthat creating an app focused on reading was their priority.  “There are some bells and whistles, but we’re very careful about that.  We think about whether or not they add any value.  And if they don’t out the window they go,” she said.
In related news, Conde Nast announced that since introducing its magazines through Apple’s subscription service, the company has garnered 242,000 digital customers in a six week period. Leading the way of all its digital publications has been The New Yorker.

The Superintendent of New Hanover County schools is using coffee as a way to entice and encourage parents to ask questions about the upcoming school year.
It's part of a new series called "Coffee Talks." Dr. Tim Markley hopes the coffee and the informal setting will improve communication between parents and educators.

Weather Channel

Before the end of this year’s hurricane season the local television company CITN says it will be introducing a 24/7 local weather cable channel which will be broadcast on channel 24. The station said the channel will be automatically updated with the latest local, regional, and international weather news including hourly local forecasts, and storm alerts. CITN has also announced plans to broadcast Cayman 27 in high definition which will include programmes from Island 24 which is now going off air, officials said.
In a release the television company stated that the equipment has been ordered and plans are underway for the major upgrade. WestStar customers will be able to watch the local channel in standard definition on channel 27, and subscribers to WestStar’s HD service can watch in high definition on channel 327. Viewers that receive the signal free over-the-air may need a converter box if their TV cannot receive digital signal.
General Manager and Director of WestStar, Mike Martin said it was an exciting time for the station. “Last year we launched new local programming and now that we are upgrading to HD everyone will be able to experience better picture quality.”
Officials said the upgrade to HD will be a major investment for CITN, so executives have decided to focus all resources on making Cayman 27 the best local channel possible.   As CITN focuses all efforts on Cayman 27, Island 24 will be taken off the air, and many of the most popular programmes from Island 24 will be merged onto Cayman 27.
“In the next few weeks, we will have a better idea of what the new line-up will look like and we will make sure that the public are aware of changes well in advance,” said  Programming Director, Anita Smith.
An exact date for the changes to programming and the launch of HD and the local weather cable channel has not been set yet.

iCloud

Apple’s iCloud.com beta Website is now live, kicking off Cupertino’s Great Cloud Push of 2011.
At this time, the Website is only accessible to a few—typing your Apple ID into the login page, for example, will return a notice reading “The iCloud.com Beta is only available to developers.” According to the blog Apple Insider, there have been some successful attempts to login, resulting in a glimpse of some revamped (and cloud-optimized) productivity apps.
The final version of iCloud will ship along with iOS 5 sometime this fall. As part of the service, Apple will offer 5GB of storage for free, with an additional 10GB for $20 per year, 20GB for $40 per year, and 50GB for $100 per year.
Apple clearly plans on leveraging its substantial market presence in hardware, software and media to make iCloud a success, and push back against similar offerings from Google and Amazon.com. The latter two have something of a head start in the consumer-cloud category: Amazon’s Cloud Drive lets users store documents and music within the cloud, while Google has expanded its cloud offerings beyond productivity to music, courtesy of the recently released Music Beta.
The emerging iCloud paradigm will also help Apple more fully embrace its ethos of a “post-PC” world, in which mobile devices such as the iPhone take precedence in users’ lives over the traditional PC. Already, the company has taken some baby steps toward this mobile-centric paradigm. Its new Mac OS X “Lion” incorporates features, such as an app store, originally developed for its iOS mobile operating system. And its thin-and-light MacBook Air has replaced the white MacBook as Apple’s entry-level laptop.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his executives originally demonstrated iCloud during the June 6 kickoff for the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference. In addition to serving as an online repository for documents, photos and music, iCloud will sync data across a variety of iOS and Mac OS X devices. Contacts, calendar and mail are now cloud-optimized features, with automatic updates and synced messaging.
For users, iCloud offers some distinct advantages in the realm of not-losing-your-stuff. Users will be able to see all their downloaded apps in the “purchase history” section of the App Store, and re-download them at no additional cost. Apple’s e-books (or “iBooks,” as the company likes to call them) will work in a similar fashion, with iCloud giving users the ability to download their texts to any of their devices. Bookmarks, notes and highlighting likewise carry between all the editions on all devices.
Some analysts see the iCloud as increasing Apple’s “stickiness” among consumers. In a research note released on the heels of Apple first revealing its cloud initiative in June, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White wrote, “These new announcements further strengthen Apple’s digital ecosystem by providing consumers with increased functionality, enhanced ease of use, greater efficiency and cool new features… that we believe will drive further adoption of Apple devices in the future.”

This report is an update to NOAA’s original Gulf of Mexico at a Glance, published in June 2008.
The updated version includes nineteen topics that reveal highlights about the region, such as changes in the Gulf’s coastal population from 1970 to 2020, the impact the Gulf’s coastal areas have on the U.S. economy, the extent of land-based and marine protected areas in the Gulf coast region, and the vulnerability of the Gulf coast to long-term sea level rise.
Highlights of the report’s summary facts include:
    Gulf Communities:
    • Population in the 141 coastal watershed counties of the Gulf Coast Region, has increased 109 percent since 1970, compared to a 52 percent increase in total U.S. population.
    • 17 percent of the population in the Gulf Coast region lives below the poverty level, compared to 13 percent nationally.
    Gulf Economy:
    • If they were their own country, the five U.S. Gulf states—Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas—would together rank seventh in global Gross Domestic Product.
    • The Gulf Coast Region had 13 of the nation’s 20 leading ports for tonnage in 2009.
    • In 2009, three of the top six commercial fishing ports in the U.S. by pounds landed were in the Gulf Coast region.
    Gulf Ecosystems:
    • More than 15,000 plant and animal species are found in Gulf of Mexico waters.
    • 31 percent of the Gulf of Mexico coastal watershed area is comprised of wetlands, a total of 28,372 square miles of this valuable natural resource.
    • Nearly 60 percent of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shoreline is considered very vulnerable to sea level rise.
“The natural disasters the Gulf of Mexico has endured over the past decade have cast a national spotlight on the strong interconnection between the Gulf economy and ecosystems and its people,” said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “This report provides a valuable snapshot of the region for our partners, government and non-government alike, who work to protect lives and property, sustain the resilient Gulf ecosystem, and advance the scientific and stewardship goals outlined in the President’s National Ocean Policy.”

Recession 2011

The risk that the U.S. economy will lapse into another recession has gone up in the past six months, said Christina Romer, former chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers.
“The risks have gone up for another recession compared to where we were six months ago,” Romer said in a television interview on “Bloomberg Street Smart” with Carol Masser and Matt Miller. “That’s still not my best estimate of where we’re headed, but it’s certainly a bigger risk today than it was in the past.”
The U.S. economy grew less than forecast in the second quarter, after almost stalling at the start of the year. Gross domestic product climbed at a 1.3 percent annual rate following a 0.4 percent gain in the prior quarter that was less than earlier estimated, Commerce Department figures showed July 29 in Washington.
Manufacturing in the U.S. almost stalled in July, threatening to deprive the recovery of one of its main drivers. The Institute for Supply Management factory index dropped to 50.9, the lowest since July 2009, from 55.3 the previous month, the group reported today. Figures less than 50 signal contraction.
The U.S. economy is headed for “more of the same” which is “anemic, but positive growth,” said Romer, 52, an economics professor at the University of California-Berkeley
“Certainly the closer you get to zero growth, the more likely it is you are going to get a negative number at some point,” she said in the interview.

HDFC Mutual Fund

MUMBAI Arvind Bansal, as a fund manager at ING Mutual Fund, does not research stocks unlike his colleagues. He studies various schemes of mutual funds to choose from. After 14 years at managing a fund of funds, he advises investors to keep away from sectoral funds that are hawked by fund houses as high return, but not told that it is a high-risk game too. "Investors should not take a sectoral call while investing in equity funds as concentrated risk is much higher in sectoral funds. And you can never say which companies will perform in a sector at what time. It's quite risky to have single-sector exposure," Bansal said.
In a bull market, any equity investment may provide a return, but when the tide turns, as it is now, it is safer to invest in a fund focused on a fund that invests in large-cap companies such as Bharti Airtel, Infosys and Larsen & Toubro, as they could weather the storm. On a three-year basis, the diversified funds category averaged 16% return compared with 13% for the S&P CNX Nifty, data from ICICI Direct shows. The benchmark Sensex has gained 2% this year against BSE's Midcap/Smallcap indices' (-7%) and (-11%) returns during the same period.
"It's always better to take a capitalisation call," said Bansal, who manages portfolio worth Rs 400 crore that are invested mostly in diversified funds such as DSP Blackrock Equity, Birla Frontline, HDFCEquity and ICICI Focus funds." While funds that invest in consumer goods and drug makers have outperformed this year, sectoral funds such as Reliance Infrastructure, SBI Infrastructure and L&T Infrastructure have grossly underperformed. Consumer goods have returned 11% this year and pharma funds 4%, reflecting investor choice for safety than high risk.
Infrastructure and banking funds have lost 3-5% over the past three months. "I am quite bearish on infrastructure and real estate," said Bansal. "The BSE Capital Goods index, which includes several engineering companies, is down 11% this year while the real estate benchmark has fallen more than 39% over the past one year," he added. Bansal has invested 70% of his equity portfolio in large-cap/diversified equity funds and 20-25% in midcap funds. He has also allocated about 15% to Nifty ETFs as he expects (diversified equity) fund managers to underperform the index in the short-term.
"Investors should look at shortterm funds," said Bansal. With upward bias on rates still on, the risk of going wrong in a gilt or income funds is very high. Risk-reward trade off is skewed towards shortterm funds," Bansal said. The value and price of bonds fall when interest rate rises.
According to Bansal, fixed maturity plans (FMPs) provide good opportunities for investors, but being accrual product will not be 'in-the-money' when rates fall. "If you're at the end of a rate cycle, it is better for investors to stay out of FMPs," he said.

BSNL Broadband

It was a bad year for BSNL as revenues came tumbling down by 10%. The company netted revenues of `28,877 crore in FY11 vis-a-vis `32,072 crore in FY10. The fall in revenues can be attributed to increased competition, capacity constraint, and decrease in quality of service.
The company has lost revenues both in fixed and mobile division whereas the company has gained revenues in broadband division. In fixedline, BSNL holds majority share of 72.6% and has a subscriber base of of 25.2 mn as on March 2011 as against 27.8 mn in March 2010, a decline of 9.36%.
In mobile, BSNL has added 22.3 mn lines in FY11 taking the overall tally to 91.8 mn lines. With respect to 3G, the service has been extended to 760 cities and all 117.06 mn mobile customers are experiencing 3G advantages. Presently, BSNL has around 1.5 mn 3G subscribers. The company is making efforts to popularize 3G services through 3G experience center on mobile vans, bundling handset and data card, and rationalizing tariffs by making it affordable, providing value added services to offer variety and provide increased reach to all target audience.
Broadband has done exceptionally well for BSNL as the company is present in 100% districts and 98% block headquarters. So, in toto the broadband coverage is available in more than 5,000 cities and 170,000 villages. The company has added 1.76 mn broadband lines in FY11. With respect to broadband, the company is providing IP-TV, games-on-demand, music-on-demand and tutor-on-demand services.
In broadband, BSNL has moved an extra mile. The company has provided broadband coverage to 60,000 CSCs (common service centers) pan India through ADSL 2+ and WiMax technologies. In Ministry of HRD project of National Mission for Education using ICT, BSNL has provided 1 Gbps connection to around 356 out of 400 universities pan India thereby creating a super highway for universities. The company has also provided 20 broadband VPN connections to around 11,500 colleges out of 18,000 colleges in last 18 months. In FY12, the company is planning to add 7.5 mn additional broadband connections of which 50% each will be wireless and wireline connections.
BSNL revenues have been declining from last 3 years and there seems to have been no course correction. The total revenue loss in the last 3 years has been to the tune of `6,290 crore which is a big loss for the company. To boost revenues, the company is betting heavily on enterprise and is planning to increase its revenue from `2,368 crore in FY11 to `3,500 crore in FY12.
To make this happen, the company has segmented customers on the basis of platinum, gold, and silver and are catering to the needs of each segment by opening platinum, gold, and silver offices across the country. For enterprise customers, the company is providing a single window coverage by joining hands with MTNL thereby providing pan-India coverage.
The company is on a revival mode and the focus is on cost reduction in each of the field units by identifying unproductive expenditure and capping it straightaway. Simultaneously, the maintenance divisions are critically reviewing systems and procedures to bring efficiency in the system.
Each circle has been directed to bring 10% reduction in opex by improving efficiency. Not only this, the company is looking at all possible additional sources of revenue, eg, renting out towers to other service providers, utilizing vacant space in buildings for telecom and IT related activities, and bandwidth leasing.
All this with improved 3G, mobile, and broadband services will help in bailing out the company from financial crisis in FY12.

Comex 2011

    Comex 2011
Gold on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange was only slightly lower on Monday after an agreement to raise the US debt ceiling did little to alleviate investor worries about the possibility of a near-term ratings downgrade.

Gold futures for December delivery were last down $4.60 or 0.2 percent at $1,626.40 per ounce in New York; however, the initial drop was far less than the 5-10 percent correction that some analysts had predicted immediately following a debt ceiling deal.

Republican and Democratic leadership over the weekend agreed to support a plan to raise the country's debt limit by $2.1 trillion in exchange for around $2.5 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade. The plan is expected to be voted on later this afternoon.

“There has been some [gold] selling overnight but traders haven't been particularly aggressive,” a US-based trader said. “This package still has to get voted on and, given the last couple weeks of drama and dysfunction, there's always the chance for things to go pear-shaped at the last minute.”

“The market can now turn their attention back to Europe, which is in a far, far worse position than the US,” the trader added.

The sell-off in precious metals was not as dramatic as some might have feared because the debt agreement by itself does not preclude a possible downgrade of the US’ debt rating, Standard Bank said.

“With a total of $2.5 trillion in deficit cuts proposed over the next decade falling short of the $4 trillion some have touted as required to maintain the [US’] AAA rating, uncertainty prevails,” it said. “This should see investor interest in the safe-haven appeal of gold and silver not completely evaporate.”

The index of US factory activity from the Institute for Supply Management dropped to 50.9 from 55.3 in the previous month, the ISM said on Monday. This was also lower than expectations for a reading of 55.

“[The ISM] number is just another reminder that the economy still isn't healthy,” a US-based fund manager said. “Gold's going to be well supported until the US shows some signs that it's ready to move out of the doldrums.”

In wider markets, the dollar was last about 1.25 cents higher against the euro at 1.4270, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 53 points or 0.44 percent at 12,090.11.

Additionally, support for gold is coming from speculative community. Last week, the speculative length on Comex rose 20.7 tonnes to 866.4 tonnes. This was due to a modest 8.6-tonne decrease in longs to 965 tonnes and a sizeable 29.3-tonne reduction in shorts to 98.6 tonnes, according to CFTC data.

“The sustained drop-off in gold speculative shorts is encouraging. Nevertheless, the build-up in long positions seems overdone, which could see some price weakness over the next week,” Standard Bank said.

As for the other precious metals, Comex silver for September delivery was last down 48.1 cents at $39.625 per ounce. Trade has ranged from $39.04 to $39.83.

Platinum for October delivery on Nymex was up $10.90 at $1,796.20 per ounce, while the September palladium contract was up $14.90 at $842.60.

Cosco Corp

    Cosco Corp
Shipping group Cosco Corp said its second quarter net profit declined 53 per cent to S$31.9 million year-on-year, while group revenue rose three per cent to S$996 million from S$962.5 million a year earlier.

Cosco said the decline in profit was due to lower contributions from dry bulk shipping and shipyard operations as dry bulk charter rates slumped from the more favourable charter rates in the same quarter last year.

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI), a measure of shipping costs for commodities, slumped 58.3 per cent to an average of 1,379 points in 2Q 2011 from the corresponding quarter average BDI in 2010.

As of 30 June, the group's orders book stood at US$7 billion, with deliveries up to the first half of 2014.

Cosco said it is still maintaining a cautious outlook for 2011 as the global economy remains fragile over the sovereign-debt crisis in Europe.

It is also concerned that its operating margins in its shipyard operation may be compromised by factors including a stronger yuan, higher Chinese interest rates, steel price hikes and possible wage rises in China.

But it added that on an upbeat note, it is seeing a greater demand for oil rigs and other specialised support vessels with the higher price of oil driving the offshore & marine industry into an up cycle.

Cosco said that it intends to optimise on the up cycle while continuing to leverage on the strength of its diversified business to remain competitive in its strategic market position.

Barclays Results

Barclays delivered an encouraging performance in the first half of 2011. Our universal banking model provides diversification by business line, product, geography and funding source, and has again been a source of strength in volatile financial markets. Adjusted Group profit before tax increased 24% to £3,678m (2010: £2,963m). Net operating income, excluding own credit, increased 6% to £13,413m (2010: £12,650m) as the continued improvement in impairment more than offset a 3% fall in total income, excluding own credit, to £15,241m.
We set out at our recent Investor Seminar our plans to deliver 13% return on equity by 2013. The results we are reporting today demonstrate the steady progress we are making on delivering against that goal, despite economic and regulatory uncertainties, by focusing on our core execution priorities of Capital, Returns, Income Growth and Citizenship.
    Capital
We continue to strengthen our capital position and our net asset value. Our Core Tier 1 ratio stood at 11.0% at the end of June, up from 10.8% at the year end. Net asset value per share also increased 6p to 423p since the year end and has increased by 9p over the second quarter.
Our Core Tier 1 ratio has now doubled from 5.6% since the end of 2008 and a significant proportion of this increase has been as a result of the sustained profitability of Barclays over this period. We will continue to generate internally any additional capital that we will be required to hold to meet regulatory change over the coming years.
We have also maintained strong liquidity, with a surplus liquidity pool, of £145bn, which protects us from funding stress, a Basel III Liquidity Coverage Ratio up to 86% from 80% at the year end and a Basel III Net Stable Funding Ratio of 96%, up from 94% at the year end. We have pre-financed all our wholesale term funding which matures in 2011. Our adjusted gross leverage is consistent at 20x.
In July we passed the European Banking Authority’s (EBA) Stress Test. Our EBA-defined CT1 ratio was 7.3%, significantly above the 5% minimum level set by the EBA. We achieved this result without the benefit of our shareholding in BlackRock, which is a further source of capital strength at a time of stress. We have provided further information in this Interim Results Announcement on our Eurozone exposures, the majority of which relate to our retail and corporate banking businesses in Spain, Italy and Portugal, in order to increase market understanding of our positions which we believe are appropriately marked and many of which are secured.
Our financial strength presents a rock solid foundation for our business in times of economic uncertainty.
    Returns
Our commitment is to deliver a 13% return on equity by 2013. We reaffirmed this at our recent Investor Seminar and provided further detail then on a business by business basis of how we propose to achieve this. So what progress have we made over the first half? In aggregate our adjusted return on average shareholders’ equity improved to 9.1% (2010: 6.9%) and our adjusted return on average tangible shareholders’ equity improved to 10.9% (2010: 8.4%).
    Retail and Business Banking
We are focused on creating happy customers and positive operating jaws, in other words income growing faster than costs, in order to deliver returns on equity of 13-15% by 2013. We have set aside £1bn as a provision to enable us to resolve outstanding Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) complaints and are moving quickly to clear this issue in a transparent and efficient manner. In UK Retail and Business Banking, we are executing end-to-end customer process simplification with the goal of reducing complaints by between 20% and 50% per process by 2013. Our customer satisfaction shows encouraging trends. We closed our branch-based financial planning business as we could not see a path to adequate returns for this business in the UK. In Spain, we substantially strengthened our management team and reached agreement with labour unions and the Government to restructure our network and cost base which will see a 20% reduction in the branch network and a 16% reduction in headcount. In Europe RBB, we broke even in June before restructuring. Our European business has a way to go before reaching our target return thresholds but we are taking the tough decisions that will put this on track. In Barclaycard we acquired the Egg consumer card assets and MBNA corporate card portfolio in the UK. And in Africa RBB we are integrating the operational management of Absa and Barclays activities in the rest of the African continent to position ourselves better to take advantage of the economic growth opportunities which we expect in Africa in the years to come.
    Corporate and Investment Banking
The development of Barclays Capital into a full service and truly global investment bank is almost complete and in the first half we were able to reduce operating expenses. We are targeting 15% return on average equity in 2013 on Basel 3 basis. Euromoney magazine named Barclays Capital its Global Investment Bank of the Year for 2011 for the first time as clients and commentators recognise the success of this transformation. While the overall business environment for investment banking services is not as strong as we would like, Barclays Capital is on track to compete as a global top 3 player in each of the major categories in which it operates and is adapting well to regulatory change. The reduction of legacy assets by £6.0bn over the half, with assets sold at or above marks in most cases, is encouraging. At Barclays Corporate, where we are targeting an 11% return on average equity in aggregate and 14% in the UK by 2013, we have turned the corner in our international businesses. The sale of Barclays Bank Russia is well advanced and we have taken a charge in the first half in anticipation of this completing shortly. Impairment in Spain is reducing as a result of the decisive and early action we took in 2010 to address the weakness of the economy and we continue to manage our risks in Spain and Portugal very carefully given current economic weakness. Our UK business has been resilient even in the face of lack of business confidence. We are on track to break even in Barclays Corporate for the full year, with substantial improvements expected thereafter.
    Wealth and Investment Management
We set out in detail our ongoing plans for Barclays Wealth at our recent Investor Seminar. Over the half we continued to invest in the Gamma plan as we build out our banking staff and technology platforms. We continue to grow client assets and are on track to deliver our target returns on equity of 17-18% by 2013. We remain happy with our investment in BlackRock.
    Income Growth
Our ability to generate income growth is dependent on the strength of our franchises. There are three businesses within the Barclays portfolio that are world class and operate in the top tier of their respective industries, namely UK Retail and Business Banking, Barclaycard and Barclays Capital. Each of these businesses has proven scale, leading technology and deep relationships with their customers and clients. These businesses are generating good returns in a tough economic environment that clearly demonstrates the value of these franchises.
We also have two businesses that stand on the threshold of the top tier. Barclays Wealth and Barclays Africa have great opportunities to build on their current positions. In Africa we are integrating the operational management of Absa and Barclays Africa to take full advantage of the people, technology and product expertise that exist in these businesses and our African franchises as a whole delivered income growth of 8% in the first half of 2011. In Barclays Wealth we continue to invest to build a leading reputation for performance and client service, and increase our scale. Income growth in the first half was 12% here following growth of 18% for 2010. Over the next two to three years we think these businesses will assume global top tier positions.
We have more work to do in Barclays Corporate outside the UK and in our Europe Retail and Business Bank. We believe that in both cases we have the foundations of good businesses with strong client and customer franchises. We have taken decisive action in order to improve performance which I have already referred to. These results demonstrate that our efforts are starting to pay off, but we acknowledge there is still more hard work required.
Before turning to our Citizenship performance, I want to address the overall economic and regulatory environment which will influence our revenue and impairment performance going forward.
    Macroeconomic Environment
Market uncertainty about the outlook for sovereign debt in some Eurozone countries and in the US will only be allayed by decisive leadership. We have said consistently that we support efforts to deleverage the public sector in the UK and elsewhere and believe that the private sector must take up the mantle of supporting growth.
To play their full role as a catalyst for growth, banks need a clear regulatory framework within which to operate.
Together, resolution of the developed world sovereign debt crisis and a speedy conclusion of the bank regulatory reform agenda will give businesses the confidence that many currently lack to invest and grow. We note the actions of our clients: for example, the current account balances of our UK small business customers have grown 41% since the start of the year as many retain cash rather than invest.
We support efforts to reduce public sector deficits and to produce a stronger regulatory framework for banks. We continue to work with our clients, governments and regulators to support economic growth and job creation, and to deliver a safer financial system, despite the current uncertainty. The strength of corporate balance sheets and the cash that companies currently hold bodes well for economic activity and jobs once certainty is achieved, and confidence is restored. I believe that economic growth can be delivered in developed markets even as governments cut spending.
    Regulation
Obtaining regulatory certainty is critically important in order for us to make long term investment and risk decisions in each of our businesses. During the first half of the year the Independent Commission on Banking (ICB) issued its Interim Report, including preliminary recommendations for the ring fencing of UK retail banking activities. We continue to engage proactively and constructively with the ICB, regulators and UK Government to ensure a rational and carefully evaluated set of reforms emerge that help to improve the safety of the banking system so that taxpayers are never again called upon to rescue banks, without imposing unnecessary costs or leaving the UK financial sector disadvantaged competitively relative to banks based elsewhere.
Since the end of the first half, the Financial Stability Board (FSB) has produced guidelines for globally systemically important financial institutions (GSIFIs) and recommendations for bail-in regimes and the EU has published draft regulations and directives that will introduce the Basel III framework into EU law. We continue to engage constructively with international regulators as policy proposals are developed ahead of the scheduled G20 meeting in November.
We are also engaged in the Dodd-Frank Act rule writing process in the US and expect to see continued progress over the second half of the year.
A final regulatory outcome will provide a clearer backdrop against which we can judge how much we continue to invest in our business and in the broader promotion of economic growth, versus how much we retain in higher levels of capital, or distribute to shareholders by way of a dividend. Our current dividend policy in the meantime must remain conservative though we are mindful of the importance of progressive, and affordable, increases.
    Citizenship
As the Chief Executive of Barclays I have, on a number of occasions, explained the importance of citizenship and why I believe it is at the very heart of how we make decisions and manage the organisation in the interests of all stakeholders.
During the first half we supported almost 52,000 business start ups in the UK. Consistent with the objectives of Project Merlin, we remain open for business. In extending £20bn of new lending to UK businesses in the first six months of 2011 we have met the commitments we made to the UK Government regarding the extension of credit to the UK economy. We remain determined to continue to do so going forward.
You saw us take definitive action on behalf of customers relating to PPI redress in the UK. We have now drawn a line under this issue. Above all, we will continue to put customers first in all our businesses.
Barclays employs over 145,000 people globally including more than 55,000 in the UK. During the first half of this year we helped 1,300 young people experience the working world for the first time through paid internships and industrial placements.
Over 45,000 Barclays colleagues participated in Community Investment Programmes in the first half of the year, up by more than a third for the same period last year. Their combined efforts resulted in over 150,000 hours of volunteering and £9m in fundraising.
    Conclusion
We are working hard to deliver against our 2013 return targets and our execution priorities. We have made good progress in the first half in delivering against these in a difficult operating environment and we remain completely focused on maintaining this momentum. I would like to pay tribute to my colleagues around the world and thank them for their unrelenting focus in helping us to deliver against our goals.

    Group Finance Director’s Review
    Group Performance
Barclays delivered adjusted profit before tax of £3,678m in the first half of 2011, an increase of 24% on 2010, after excluding movements on own credit, loss on acquisitions and disposals, and provision for Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) redress. Including these items, profit before tax was £2,644m (2010: £3,947m).
We have published our results on a statutory and adjusted basis because we viewed a number of items as one-off and want to demonstrate the trends in our operating performance.
Income excluding own credit, decreased 3% to £15,241m (2010: £15,730m). Retail and Business Banking (RBB) income increased by 3% to £6,697m, despite slow economic growth in RBB’s major markets. Barclays Capital reported an 11% decrease in total income excluding own credit to £6,263m (2010: £7,061m). This decrease reflected lower contributions from the Fixed Income and Commodities businesses, partially offset by improved performance in Currencies, Equities and Prime Services, and Investment Banking.
Impairment charges across the Group against loans and advances, available for sale assets and reverse repurchase agreements improved 41% to £1,828m (2010: £3,080m). Impairment charges as a proportion of Group loans and advances as at 30 June 2011 improved to 74bps, compared to 118bps for the full year 2010.
Net operating income was flat at £13,502m (2010: £13,501m) with particularly strong increases for RBB (up 14% to £5,390m), Barclays Corporate (up 90% to £857m) and Barclays Wealth (up 14% to £829m) offset by Barclays Capital (down 15% to £6,463m).
Operating expenses, excluding the £1,000m provision for PPI redress, increased 1% to £9,829m (2010: £9,720m) reflecting an increase in restructuring costs to £216m (2010: £93m). Operating expenses in Barclays Capital decreased 3% to £4,073m. Operating expenses in RBB, excluding provision for PPI redress, increased 9% to £3,973m, principally reflecting restructuring, goodwill impairment and non-recurrence of a 2010 pension credit. Operating expenses in Barclays Corporate were broadly flat at £839m, while the 17% increase in Barclays Wealth to £740m reflected investment spend, including Project Gamma.
As a result, the Group’s adjusted cost: net operating income ratio decreased to 73% (2010: 77%). At Barclays Capital the cost: net operating income (excluding own credit) ratio was 64% (2010: 62%), within our 60-65% planning range, and the compensation: income (excluding own credit) ratio was 45% (2010: 42%).
Adjusted return on average shareholders’ equity improved to 9.1% (2010: 6.9%) and adjusted return on average tangible shareholders’ equity improved to 10.9% (2010: 8.4%). Statutory return on average shareholders’ equity was 5.9% (2010: 9.8%) and statutory return on average tangible shareholders’ equity was 7.1% (2010: 12.0%).
    Business Performance
    Retail and Business Banking
Adjusted profit before tax for RBB rose 33% to £1,446m (2010: £1,086m) and rose 26% relative to the second half of 2010 £1,149m. Statutory profit before tax decreased 63% to £446m (2010: £1,219m).
There was exceptionally strong reduction in impairment in both UK and Barclaycard driven by focused credit risk management and card balance repayments in the US, and also strong reductions in Europe and Africa, leading to an overall reduction in impairment of 27% to £1,307m (2010: £1,800m). This in turn drove a very strong improvement in the risk adjusted net interest income margin.
Operating expenses in RBB increased 36% due to the provision of £1,000m for PPI redress. Excluding this provision, restructuring charges in Europe of £129m, goodwill impairment in Barclaycard of £47m and one-off pension credits of £200m in 2010, operating expenses were slightly down and operating jaws were positive.
RBB made good progress toward its overall 13% return on equity commitment with both UK and Barclaycard adjusted returns on equity (excluding the effects of the PPI provision) already exceeding the hurdle rate of 13%. Returns on equity for Africa and Europe remain on track to achieve the 13% threshold by 2013 and 2015 respectively. The adjusted return on average equity for RBB as a whole was 10% (2010: 9%).
    Business Performance
    Corporate and Investment Banking
Adjusted profit before tax for Corporate and Investment Banking rose 7% to £2,327m (2010: £2,172m) and rose 47% relative to the second half of 2010 (£1,586m). Statutory profit before tax decreased 22% to £2,352m (2010: £3,023m).
Barclays Capital adjusted profit before tax reduced 9% to £2,310m (2010: £2,549m). Including an own credit gain of £89m (2010: gain of £851m), profit before tax was £2,399m (2010: £3,400m). Total income excluding own credit was £6,263m, down 11% (2010: £7,061m). Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities (FICC) income of £3,916m declined 20%, reflecting lower contributions from the Fixed Income and Commodities businesses, partially offset by improved performance in Currencies. Equities and Prime Services income of £1,108m increased 5%, with growth in derivatives and equity financing. Investment Banking income of £1,132m increased 11%, driven by equity underwriting.
There was a net impairment release of £111m (2010: charge of £309m), including a £223m impairment release relating to Protium, prior to consolidation, offset by charges primarily relating to leveraged finance. Operating expenses decreased 3%. Excluding the impact of own credit, cost to net operating income was 64% and compensation to income was 45%. Adjusted return on average equity was 15% (2010: 14%).
Total income excluding own credit in the second quarter of 2011 was £2,897m, down 14% on the first quarter of 2011, reflecting lower activity levels. FICC income declined 22% and Investment Banking decreased 15% following a very strong first quarter in equity and debt underwriting. Equities and Prime Services income increased 3%.
Barclays Corporate adjusted profit before tax was £17m (2010: loss of £377m), excluding a provision for the expected loss on disposal of Barclays Bank Russia of £64m. Including this provision the loss before tax was £47m. Profits increased in the UK and losses were reduced significantly in both Europe and Rest of the World. Income increased 5%, reflecting improvement in net interest income and a reduction in writedowns of venture capital investments. Impairment charges improved 35% to £614m (2010: £949m), driven by improvements in Spain where the charge decreased to £299m (2010: £553m). In the UK and Rest of the World operations, impairment charges also improved. Operating expenses grew 1% to £839m (2010: £829m). Adjusted return on average equity was 0%, an improvement on the negative return of 11% for the first half of 2010.
    Business Performance
    Wealth and Investment Management
Adjusted profit before tax for Wealth and Investment Management, excluding losses on disposal of shares in BlackRock, Inc., rose 10% to £139m (2010: £126m) and rose 34% relative to the second half of 2010 (£104m). Statutory profit before tax decreased 36% to £81m (2010: £126m).
Barclays Wealth profit before tax decreased 7% to £88m (2010: £95m), reflecting strong income growth offset by increased investment in the growth of the business. Income increased 12% to £848m (2010: £757m) from strong growth in both net interest income, and fee and commission income. Operating expenses increased 17%, reflecting investment spend and related restructuring to support the Wealth investment programme including Project Gamma expenditure of £44m (2010: £33m). Total client assets increased 3% to £169.5bn (31 December 2010: £163.9bn). Return on average equity was 10% (2010: 10%).
Investment Management reported an adjusted profit before tax of £51m (2010: £31m), excluding £58m loss (2010: £nil) on disposal of shares in BlackRock, Inc. to maintain the Group’s strategic holding below 20%. This result principally reflected dividend income from the Group’s available for sale holding in BlackRock, Inc. which now stands at 19.7%. The loss before tax for the period was £7m (2010: profit of £31m).
The value of the holding as at 30 June 2011 was £0.8bn below the value at acquisition (31 December 2010: £0.9bn). This reduction has been reflected in the available for sale reserve and the Group’s Core Tier 1 ratio. Further assessment will be undertaken in the second half to consider whether any continued shortfall compared with the value at acquisition should, subject to any significant mitigating factors, be recognised in the income statement for 2011.
    Business Performance
Head Office Functions and Other Operations
Head Office Functions and Other Operations loss before tax was £235m (2010: loss £421m). Operating expenses decreased by £192m to £198m (2010: £390m), reflecting non-recurrence of a provision of £194m in relation to US economic sanctions. Income was flat at £37m loss (2010: loss £36m).
The impact of the UK bank levy, for which legislation was enacted in July 2011, has not been reflected in these results in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. The total cost for 2011 is expected to be in the range of £350m- £400m.
    Balance Sheet and Capital Management
    Shareholders’ Equity
Shareholders’ equity, including non-controlling interests, at 30 June 2011 was £62.0bn (31 December 2010: £62.3bn). Excluding non-controlling interests, shareholders’ equity was £51.6bn (2010: £50.9bn). Profit after tax of £2.0bn and positive available for sale movements were broadly balanced by negative currency translation, dividends paid and the redemption of Reserve Capital Instruments. Net asset value per share increased to 423p (31 December 2010: 417p). Net tangible asset value per share increased to 353p (31 December 2010: 346p).
    Balance Sheet
Total assets were flat at £1,493bn (31 December 2010: £1,490bn), reflecting fluctuations in normal trading. This included reductions in gross interest rate derivative assets, reverse repurchase agreements and other similar secured lending, and a decrease in cash at central banks offset by increases in loans and advances (primarily in relation to settlement balances), available for sale investments and trading portfolio assets. The consolidation of Protium resulted in a reduction of loans and advances with the underlying assets now classified in trading portfolio assets and financial assets designated at fair value. Assets contributing to adjusted gross leverage increased 1% to £1,061bn (2010: £1,053bn).
    Capital Management
At 30 June 2011, the Group’s Core Tier 1 ratio on a Basel II basis was 11.0% (31 December 2010: 10.8%). Retained profit excluding the impact of PPI redress contributed to a 44bps increase in Core Tier 1 ratio, more than sufficient to absorb the impact of the PPI provision and other movements. Risk weighted assets decreased to £395bn (31 December 2010: £398bn), largely as a result of foreign exchange movements. Excluding the impact of foreign exchange, risk weighted asset reductions from the sell down of legacy assets in Barclays Capital were off-set by increases as a result of the Egg acquisition and regulatory methodology changes implemented through the period.
The Group’s Core Tier 1 ratio at the end of 2011 is expected to be impacted by an estimated £40bn increase of risk weighted assets as a result of the introduction of Basel 2.5 market risk RWA calculations.
    Liquidity and Funding
The Group liquidity and funding position remains strong.
Basel III guidelines propose two new liquidity metrics: the Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR), which measures short term liquidity stress, and the Net Stable Funding Ratio (NSFR), which measures the stability of long term structural funding. As at 30 June 2011, the LCR was estimated at 86% (31 December 2010: 80%) and the NSFR was estimated at 96% (31 December 2010: 94%).
Barclays raised £19bn wholesale term debt in the first half of the year across a variety of products and geographies. Term funding raised over the past 18 months has re-financed all wholesale term debt maturities for 2010 and 2011, funded strategic balance sheet growth and further extended the duration of our liabilities.
The liquidity pool held by the Group decreased slightly to £145bn at 30 June 2011, of which £132bn was invested in FSA- eligible assets. This reduction was the result of managing down short term deposits, with no effect on liquidity strength as reflected in the higher LCR. The cost of the liquidity pool decreased to approximately £300m for the first six months of 2011 compared to approximately £900m for the twelve months of 2010. Barclays will continue to optimise the liquidity pool within the parameters of the Group’s Liquidity Risk Framework and in anticipation of the final Basel III standards.
    Dividends
It is our policy to declare and pay dividends on a quarterly basis. We will pay an interim cash dividend for the second quarter of 2011 of 1p per share on 9 September 2011 giving a declared dividend for the first half of 2011 of 2p per share.
    Outlook
While the performance of our capital markets business in July has been impacted by current market conditions, our other businesses have performed in aggregate ahead of their run rate for the first 6 months of the year.
We will continue to maintain the Group’s strong capital, leverage and liquidity positions in anticipation of the new regulatory requirements for the banking industry.

TEVA

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (TEVA, TEVA.TV) and Active Biotech (ACTI.SK) reported that their oral treatment for multiple sclerosis, called laquinimod, missed the main goal of a major study, marking a setback for an important drug for both companies.
In the two-year study, laquinimod failed to significantly reduce the number of relapses of the disease when compared to placebo, an important measure of effectiveness in treating the debilitating disease. However, Teva said an adjusted analysis shows that the drug was successful in reducing relapse and that it still plans to file for regulatory approval of the drug in early 2012.
The drug, which had positive data in an earlier study, was developed by Sweden-based Active Biotech and licensed to Teva in 2004.
With new uncertainty surrounding the drug, American Depositary Shares of Israel-based Teva dropped 7.3% to $43.25, hitting their lowest levels in more than two years. Shares of Active Biotech plunged 51% to 38 Swedish krona ($5.99) in recent Stockholm trading.
JPMorgan analyst Chris Schott said the data were "far from clean" and that there doesn't seem to be any precedent of other MS drugs being submitted for approval using similarly adjusted data.
"While laquinimod may still be viable, we expect Teva shares to reflect little value for this asset following this morning's release until we receive further clarity from the FDA on the product," Schott said.
Several European analysts noted that the data show that laquinimod's marketing potential had dropped considerably. Active Biotech will receive a royalty of between 10% and 20% of laquinimod's sales, with a higher rate in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Laquinimod makes up about 60% of the assets in Active Biotech's product portfolio.
The setback for laquinimod is a positive for other oral MS treatments. Novartis AG (NVS, NOVN.VX) sells Gilenya, the first and only approved MS pill that was launched last year. Previously, all multiple-sclerosis treatments were injected or given intravenously. Novartis's American Depositary Shares slipped 49 cents to $60.71.
Biogen Idec Inc. (BIIB) is developing BG-12, and initial data earlier this year showed strong effectiveness that some believe will make the pill a market leader. But like laquinimod, BG-12 must also confirm those results in major data that is expected to come before year-end. Shares of Biogen recently rose 2% to $103.98.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory condition that occurs when the body essentially attacks its own central nervous system and can be disabling in advanced stages.
Teva, which sells injectable MS blockbuster Copaxone, is hoping laquinimod will give it a foothold in the emerging market for oral MS treatments amid concern for the future of Copaxone, which had $3.3 billion in sales last year and is facing challenges from generic companies.
An earlier study showed laquinimod significantly reduced the number of relapses of the disease and cut the progression of resulting disability, which had raised expectations for the second study.
The latest study, although it failed to meet its main goal, showed that initial MRI scans of the placebo and laquinimod groups weren't similar. After adjusting for the difference--an action that was already specified in the clinical trial design--the results showed that laquinimod was effective according to multiple measures.
But that analysis raises questions about whether regulators will want more information on the drug or accept the adjusted results. Typically, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires two major studies for approval of a drug to treat MS.
"Since this is predefined and it is the right thing to do scientifically, we believe the FDA will accept that, but of course we cannot predict the FDA response," said Rivka Kreitman, Teva's senior vice president of global innovative research and development.
Teva and Active both said the two laquinimod studies were very similar in their outcome. An Active Biotech spokesman described the company as "a small player that has never done anything like this, so we trust our partner very much."
The laquinimod study also included a reference arm of patients taking Biogen Idec's popular MS drug Avonex. The group wasn't designed for direct comparison to the other groups in the study, but showed that Avonex was more effective than laquinimod at cutting relapses and Avonex was less effective than the pill at delaying disability progression.

Foxconn

Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group, known for assembling Apple's iPhones and iPads inChina, plans to use more robots, with one report saying the company will use one million of them in the next three years, to cope with rising labor costs.
Foxconn's move highlights an increasing trend toward automation among Chinese companies as labor issues such as high-profile strikes and workers' suicides plague firms in sectors from autos to technology.
Contract manufacturers such as Foxconn, which also counts Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Nokia among its clients, are moving parts of their manufacturing to inland Chinese cities or other emerging markets.
They are also boosting research and development investments to lift their thin margins.
"Workers' wages are increasing so quickly that some companies can't take it longer," said Dan Bin, a fund manager at Shenzhen-based Eastern Bay Investment Management, which invests in technology and consumer-related shares in China and Hong Kong.
"Automation is a general trend in many sectors in China, such as electronics. Of course some companies will consider moving their manufacturing overseas, but it's easier said than done when the supply chain is here."
The China Business News on Monday quoted Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou as saying the company planned to use 1 million robots within three years, up from about 10,000 robots in use now and an expected 300,000 next year.
Foxconn, whose listed units include Hon Hai Precision and Foxconn International Holdings Ltd, issued a statement later saying Gou told staff at its campus in Longhua, China, that he planned to move its more than 1 million employees up the value chain beyond basic manufacturing work.
    STRIKES, SUICIDES
Foxconn, which has been plagued by a spate of workers' suicides in its Chinese factories since last year, plans to use the robots for simple assembly line procedures, the statement quoted its chairman Gou as saying.
Since last year, China has been struck by a series of labor-related issues, such as high-profile strikes and suicide cases at well-known companies as heady economic growth fueled the need for wage increases.
In southern China, auto and parts factories owned by Japan's Honda Motor and Toyota Motor went on strike.
"Rising salary costs should be the key reason why Foxconn is doing this. This year's wage increase has been quite significant and I don't expect the pace to slow down next year," said C.K. Lu, a Taipei-based senior analyst at research firm Gartner.
"If they don't do this, they will have to move their factories elsewhere."
At Foxconn, a worker fell to his death last month at a manufacturing plant in southern China, local media reported.
The worker's death was the latest in a series of apparent suicides by young migrant workers at its factory complexes in the past two years.
Foxconn employs about 1.2 million workers, one million of which are based in mainland China, the China Business News said.
"The use of automation is driven by Foxconn's desire to move workers from more routine tasks to more value-added positions in manufacturing such as R&D, innovation and other areas that are equally important to the success of our operations," Foxconn said.
Foxconn plans to buy a set-top plant in Mexico from Cisco Systems and is looking into investing more in Brazil, where it is already making mobile phone handsets.
It has bought LCD TV plants from Japan's Sony Corp in Mexico in 2009 and Slovakia in 2010 and is in cooperation talks with a number of top Japanese hi-tech firms, including Sharp, Canon and Hitachi.
On Monday, Hon Hai Precision's Taiwan shares rise 3.3 percent, while Foxconn's cellphone maker unit Foxconn International's Hong Kong shares ended up 4.3 percent.
Shares of another of the group's unit, Foxonn Technology Holdings Ltd, which mainly makes casings, jumped 6.8 percent.

Dow Jones

U.S. stocks fell, erasing an early rally, as weak manufacturing data and worries that ratings firms still could downgrade the U.S. government's credit overpowered investor relief about a debt-ceiling deal.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 121 points, or 1%, to 12014, after briefly falling below 12,000 for the first time since late June. Earlier, the measure had gained as much as 139 points immediately after the open as investors reacted to the weekend debt agreement. The action added to what was the Dow's biggest weekly point loss since May 2010, which came as investors fretted last week that Washington had run out of time to engineer a debt agreement.
The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index lost 16 points, or 1.2%, to 1276, with all sectors losing ground. The Nasdaq Composite lost 31 points, or 1.1%, to 2726.
Stocks turned negative after a July reading on the manufacturing sector came in well beneath economists' expectations, renewing worries about the state of the U.S. economy. Investors have been anticipating that the economic "soft patch" seen this year and the aftereffects of Japan's earthquake and tsunami would give way to stronger growth in the second half. But the data did little to support those notions.
Markets still were wary over the state of the U.S. debt-ceiling negotiations. A second look at lawmakers' weekend pact spurred some investors to worry that the deal wouldn't be enough to obviate the threat of ratings downgrades. There also was concern that the length of the talks and severity of market gyrations were beginning to have an impact on the broader economy.
"Clearly what's going on in D.C. is affecting the overall economy," said Gary Flam, portfolio manager at Los Angeles-based Bel Air Investment Advisors. "The longer [the debt debates] go on, the more headwinds we face. The bulls' argument was [that] you'll have an acceleration in the economy in the second half. That's being called in to question now."
The early rally in European markets also vanished after the weak U.S. manufacturing data. Asian bourses closed higher in a reflection of investors' initial sigh of relief at a debt pact in Washington.
Health-care stocks were the S&P 500's weakest performers after Medicare said it will cut payment rates to skilled nursing facilities by 11.1% next fiscal year, sending shares of health-care providers tumbling. The decision adjusts for what the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services calls an unexpected rise in nursing-home payments this fiscal year.
Kindred Healthcare slumped 30% while Sun Healthcare Group plunged 56% and Skilled Healthcare Group lost 44%. Sunrise Senior Living lost 6.6%.
Merck shed 3.6% to lead decliners in the blue-chip Dow. Home Depot was also weak, falling 2.8%.
In corporate news, the U.S.-listed shares ofHSBC Holdings climbed 3.1% after the bank reported revenue for the first half of the year that exceeded estimates and said it was cutting about 30,000 jobs to revamp its global business.
Paetec Holdings jumped 20% after rural telecom company Windstream said it planned an $891 million all-stock purchase of the company, which focuses on providing broadband and other services to businesses. Windstream's shares shed 1.2%.
